# TRCF = (TRC x 1,000,000) / Man hours

TRC (Total Recordable Case) is the sum of all work-related fatalities, lost time injuries (LTIs), restricted work cases/injuries (RWCs) and medical treatment cases/injuries (MTCs)

## TRCs = LTIs + RWCs + MTCs

Therefore, TRCF = Number of LTI + MTC + RWC X 1,000,000 / Man hours

## LTIs

In a previous post, I defined Lost time as when an injury that occurs results in the involved person or persons staying away from work for more than 24 hours. It could also be that the injury resulted in death! Read up the post and you will remember how I said the calculation can be done.

Now that we already know how to calculate LTIs from my previous post, let’s now understand how we can calculate RWCs and MTCs to enable us make progress and get our end result – TRCF.

## RWC

This is injury that results in an individual being unable to perform all normally assigned work functions during his/her scheduled work shift, or being assigned to another job 24 hours after the injury.

What I mean by “unable to perform normal assigned work functions” is if the individual performs all normal duties at less than the full time schedule or performs limited duties at normally assigned job at full- time schedule.

For example, I would say an individual who normally partakes in operating a forklift for 1 hour can now only do so for say 15 minutes or can no longer even partake in that activity. Or a driver who can drive a truck from Lagos to Benin (usually for about 4 hours) can now only get to Mowe (45minutes max) before giving up on the task. Such an incident will be termed under Restricted Work Cases.

## MTC

This is any work-related loss of consciousness, injury or illness requiring more than first aid treatment by registered medical personnel e.g. surgeon, dentist etc. Injuries in this category does not include First Aid ailments or normal medical checks. Rather we are talking about injuries that results in sutures, use of casts or splints to immobilise, surgery etc.

Now unto the calculation using a case study in my usual fashion 😉

## Man Hours

To calculate man hours, take a look at the previous post on LTIF where I gave this formula and an example:

Formula: Total Man Hours worked = Total No of employees X No of hours worked X No of worked days

For example, in ABC & Sons, they have 58 employees who work 7.5 hours a day, 22 days a month, 264 days a year.

ABC & Sons Total Man Hours for a month is:
Total Man Hours worked = Total No of employees X No of hours worked X No of worked days
Total Man Hours at ABC & Sons = 58 X 7.5 X 22
Total man hours at ABC & Sons = 9,570

Using same data, for simplicity sake, let’s now calculate the TRCF.

Note that the man hours for ABC & Sons is calculated for a month. To get the yearly hours, let’s multiply this by 12.

Total man hours for the year = 9570 x 12 = 114,840

If ABC & Sons had 8 LTIs, 9 RWCs and 7 MTCs during a year in which they had 1,378,080 man hours.

Their TRCF= [(8 + 9 + 7) x 1,000,000 ] / 114,840 = 208.97

This means that ABC & Sons have a TRCF of 208.97 per every 1,000,000 hours in a year (or whatever your desired unit is but make sure the unit is consistent throughout your calculation to prevent discrepancies).

this is supposed to be man hours for a year, then why is it required to be multiplied by 12 further.
